Servers that exist mainly to host or spread the kinds of content below are removed from the directory and from every total on the site. Decisions are informed by community reports, documented violations and the health of the network as a whole. Banned servers contribute nothing to the statistics.
What gets a server removed
Harmful content
Servers that promote, host or tolerate content that harms people or groups, including:
- Hate speech and discrimination
- Harassment and bullying
- Non-consensual intimate imagery
- Content that promotes self-harm
- Promotion of violence against individuals or groups
Misinformation
Servers dedicated mainly to spreading:
- Deliberate misinformation campaigns
- Harmful medical misinformation
- Election interference content
- Conspiracy theories that target vulnerable communities
- Content that undermines civic processes
Illegal activity
Servers that mainly facilitate:
- Distribution of illegal content
- Coordination of illegal activities
- Sale of illegal goods or services
- Copyright infringement at scale
- Child exploitation content
Federation abuse
Servers whose behavior on the network is the problem:
- Repeated spam distribution across the fediverse
- Targeted harassment carried out through federation
- Servers created mainly to evade bans
- Repeated violation of community norms
- Coordinated inauthentic behavior
